The man they called "Satchmo", Louis Armstrong, one of the greatest jazz stars of all time, claimed to have been born in New Orleans on the 4th of July, 1900. Armstrong was inspired by Joe "King" Oliver." By the age of 22, he was playing in his idol's band.
He left that band in 1924 and went on to make musical history with his elegant performances, he broke through race barriers and became one of the first black superstars. He was referred to as America's Jazz Ambassador. In 1963, his first #1 hit,
"Hello, Dolly", knocked the Beatles out of the top spot on the charts. "What a Wonderful World" was a #1 hit in 1968. Louis Armstrong left a lasting mark on generations of musicians and music lovers.
